Obstetrician & Gynaecologist

Dr Dhara Karunaratne

BSc (Med), MBBS (UNSW), FRANZCOG, DDU
Formerly Dr Dhara Lette, I'm a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist, with further specialist training in women’s ultrasound.

I was born in Sri Lanka but essentially grew up in Singapore with short stints spent living in San Francisco and Melbourne. I started my university life at Monash, studying Law, but soon came to my senses (though many would argue otherwise) and started medicine at the University of New South Wales. Once I moved to Sydney, it was clear that this would always be my home.

I completed the majority of my specialist training at The Royal Hospital for Women, with a few years at Westmead Hospital. For two years during my specialist training, I travelled extensively and embraced a completely different lifestyle while living and volunteering in India and Nepal. This “enlightening” diversion from my specialist ‘path’ brought significant new personal insights, and more importantly, clarity to my belief that one can only truly help others when medicine’ is practiced with compassion and tolerance.

What being a Mother and parent means to me.

Becoming a mother has probably been the most difficult, yet certainly the most rewarding aspect of my obstetrics career, bringing to life the joys and intricacies of balancing motherhood with work every day, as is experienced by so many of my patients. To maintain my goal of having an attentive private practice with high standards of individual care, I limit my patient intake and the hospitals at which I practice. This also helps me achieve a personal balance of being a dedicated mother with my professional career.
